Davis & Leon (2022) report about three-fourths of all lifetime mental health disorders develop in childhood, with half starting by 14. A large percentage of children who develop symptoms remain undetected and go untreated. The National Alliance on Mental Illness states the average time between the appearance of the first symptoms and intervention is about 11 years of age. Based on the evidence and clinical practice, NPs must support early mental health screening.

Have you had any experiences screening adolescents or school-aged children in your clinical setting for depression? If so, which screening tool and class of medications have you ordered? What side effects would you be concerned about when ordering this class of medications for children or adolescents?
